Christy: How did Rented Lifestyle start?
Since launching Rented Lifestyle, many of you have inquired as to how the idea for the lifestyle started. Simply, I wanted to share my lifestyle with people and I wanted to demonstrate how, by renting, you can wear, experience and enjoy more by owning less. Renting is the ultimate share, not to mention, so financially responsible.
Rented Lifestyle really began as a seed of an idea when I bought an Alexander McQueen dress for the Grammys 2013. This amazing dress was to die for, but it cost me more than I’d ever like admit, and the worst part? I’ve only worn it once! Enter, my life of renting. When you rent instead of own, you can wear an expensive designer dress for an evening, pay a fraction of the cost of buying it and get the same amount of pleasure from it.
Like so many of you, my dream closet would have a new dress for every occasion, and my dreams became a reality with renting! After all, lifestyle is, by definition, the way in which one chooses to live their life. I am grateful to have an already pretty fabulous closet, but by renting more, I felt I was wasting less on those items that received little wear only to be eventually donated. As the seed grew, I started thinking about all the other things you could rent…
Being in Miami this weekend made me remember how Rented Lifestyle really started to grow from that seed of an idea way back in 2013. Miami, was one of the first times I rented some items from Rent the Runway. It was delivered to the hotel and I was impressed at how little luggage I had to carry. Renting was already paying off saving on extra baggage charges!
I started to think how wonderful it would be to travel the world and have a closet full of rented clothes for the weekend when I arrived. Wear the items all weekend long and then just leave all the fabulous outfits and return home. Now that’s an easy vacation. No packing and all the benefit of clothing I had never worn before. Never worn by me is just the same as new to me. Rented Lifestyle was starting to bloom into a place I could bring together a society of renters.
Shoppers of the next generation are valuing quality over quantity. I believe we are filling our closets with good pieces that are the staples and now we can fill in the rest with rented items. Rented Lifestyle started with fashion, and I truly think renting is going to be the way of the future for those who are are seeking convenience, a good deal and a streamlined, clutter-free life. And now I have applied what I have learned in fashion rental to so many more aspects of my life.
