When you’re staring at a sea of letters in the beauty aisle, it’s hard to decide which cream to grab. Here, an exploration of BB, CC and DD creams and a guide to which one is right for you.
BB Cream
The Definition: Beauty Balm
Translation: BBs are like tinted moisturizers, only better. Not only do they provide more coverage, they are usually infused with other good stuffthink SPF, antioxidants, acne fighting agents and other skin care-ingredients. Not really a replacement for actual sunscreen or even for traditional foundation, but a lighter makeup option (with some great bonuses) for those who like a fresh-faced look.
Who Should Use It: People with good skin who are looking to subtly even out their tone or who want a base for spot concealing that doesn’t give that leave you with that heavy makeup feel.
Try: Smashbox Camera Ready or Bobbi Brown, both with SPF 35
CC Cream
The Definition: Color Corrector
Translation: With a lighter consistency than a BB cream, CC cream focuses on improving redness, dark spots or acne scars on your skin, while also livening up the brightness of your complexion. Most CCs are infused with vitamins like C and E, which can help prevent future signs of aging.
Who Should Use It: People looking to correct a skin problem rather than conceal unevenness or blemishes. Will not provide much coverage, so shouldn’t be used as a make-up replacement.
Try: Juice Beauty Stem Cellular or Origins Smarty Plants
DD Cream
The Definition: This one’s the newest, and thus, the wildcard of the group. Stands for either Dynamic Do-All’ or Daily Defense.
Translation: Clearly, this category is still being figured out. Some DD creams are for your face; others are for your body. Daily Defense creams, an import from overseas, are used on dry areas like your feet, elbows and knees to lock in moisture. Dynamic Do-Alls combine the best parts of BB and CC creams, while also putting a heavy focus on anti-aging properties. With daily use, they can improve the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Who Should Use It: People with super-dry or more mature skin.
Try: DermaDoctor
