I have no scientific proof, but I think it begins the first time we get our face painted. That special feeling of looking different until Mom washed it off. I still love to have my face painted. Only now instead of butterflies and flowers, it’s eyeshadow and lipstick.

They say every bride looks beautiful on her wedding day…because she hires a makeup artist and hair stylist. There’s special events and then there’s the almighty wedding day. Renting a make-up artist is pretty much on the top of every Bride’s to-do list. Here’s some tips to help find a great one that can be used for any occassion.
1. Finding a beauty purveyor- not always easy. If you are lucky to live in a city with Glam Squad (available in NYC, LA, Miami and Hamptons) then I would suggest starting there. If not, ask friends and read reviews is my best advice. Blowout bars can hold a wealth of info, so book an appointment and start asking around there for the best.
2. Ask for a trail run- It may seem silly, but choosing your exact special day makeup look is a big deal. Almost any artist that does makeup will include a trial application in the cost of their services, but it’s still a good idea to confirm that fact.
3. Can you come to me? If you want to get glam on location (which I recommend, since it means you’ll have less exposure to the elements before the event/ceremony) you’ll need to hire a makeup artist that works remotely and not all do.
4. Can I see your portfolio? Taking a look at the scope of the artist’s work will help you determine whether or not she’s worked with your skin type, shape of eye/face etc.; not to mention, you can see for yourself if your visions of wedding day beauty align.
5. Is there a charge for re-trial? If you suddenly decide you hate the makeup look you first picked, will your artist let you take another shot at it and, if she can, will there be an additional charge? These are all good questions to ask upfront. If you’re in the second round, and there’s tension you don’t want to be overcharged.
6. What special training/education do you have? Anyone can say they do makeup; a true professional will likely have specialized training and should be able to provide evidence of their certification. Do ask.
7. Extra Changes- The last thing you want on your wedding day is to get stuck with unexpected expenses. Wedding makeup costs more, like everything seems for your wedding. Make sure you know exactly what’s included in your contract and what services will increase the cost of your bill.
Note: if you are using Glam Squad event make-up is $75 for the hour session. If you are adding lashes, it’s an extra $20. Wedding make-up you need a quote. Check out all there services at Glam Squad.
8. What if they can’t work on the day of your event? If your make-up artist is a solo practitioner, does she have a qualified associate who can fill in if she’s unable to work on the day of the ceremony? It’s crucial to find out these answers; you want to make sure that self-application isn’t the backup plan, cause an unexpected meltdown on any day, but especially your wedding.

9. Do you have any references? Talking to other people who’ve worked with the artist can tell you a lot about what type of experience you can expect. It’ll help you gauge her level of professionalism and help you to determine if your personalities will mesh wellif you expect to be emotion, can they handle it and more important can they bring the perfect mascara to deal with it?
10. Keep Track of Each Other- Once you have found a great beauty purveyor (like Jessica Andrews from OnLocation in LA) make sure you have each others information. Send a hello every once and awhile. You never know when another event may come up. Or in my case, I found Jessica first and 3 years later she was at my wedding doing my hair and make-up!
