Welcome to Dubai

Not long ago, Dubai was nothing more than a sea of sand dunes, but it has become one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world. With popularity comes cost: the price to stay in Dubai’s dizzying array of hotel rooms is second only to the expense of staying in Geneva.

Of the high-end options available, I’ve selected the Armani Hotel for my three-day sojourn. Location is greatnear to some of the must-see attractions in town, even offering guests an indoor walk-through to the Mall, for days when sandstorms make outdoor ventures less-than-pleasant. Before you check out, be sure to have a drink in the lounge, which overlooks the Dubai fountain.

For a touch of Vegas in the UAE, check out the Raffles Dubai. Built in the shape of an Egyptian pyramid, the third floor garden representing water, fire, air and earth is incredible. The hotel also regularly hosts high-end exhibitslike the most expensive diamond in the world being put on display a few years agoso you may find yourself coming here even if you don’t stay over.

One of the smaller hotels in town, the Ritz Carlton has only six floors, offering a more intimate experience. Located on Jumeirah beach walk, every room has a sea view; but be warned that surrounding development projects and a nearby airfield can sometimes make your stay noisier than desired.

So much of the sights in Dubai are man-made, but it seems a shame to travel half-way around the world and not take in the very different natural beauty of this locations. To that end, I’ll be renting a camel to enjoy an excursion into the desert (think Sex and the City 2, only without an Aiden encounter.)

Of course, the Dubai Mall is a must-see, so I may also decide to rent some ski equipment and take on the 85 meter indoor hill with 5 different slopes. Indoor skiing in the middle of the desert? Too crazy to pass up!

Last but not least, there are the Palm Islands, man-made landmasses built to form the shape of a palm tree when viewed from above. Cool enough on their own, the islands also house Atlantis Dubai, which makes for a fun side-visit, if you have the time.
