Are you supposed to give your wedding guests a ride? This area of wedding etiquette is still fairly grey, and needs closer examination. Here are my thoughts:
If, for example, you’re having a destination wedding, and guests will have already paid for hotel and airfare just to be a part of your special day, renting a bus or other form of transportation to help them get to the ceremony is the classy thing to do.
Another time when providing transportation is well-warranted? In a two-venue affair situation, where your ceremony and reception take place in separate sites. Not only will offering transportation save your guests the hassle and expense of parking twice, it will also allow wedding-attendees to enjoy a champagne toast or two without having to sober up by the end of the ceremony. Safety first, I always say!
Of course, if providing transportation just isn’t in your budget, there are other ways to be considerate: call ahead to your venue and ask them to make sure plenty of taxis are ready and waiting for guests when the ceremony and/or reception lets out. Be sure to warn people about transportation with an invitation insert and enclose detailed directions to make life a little easier.
Uber Weddings are becoming more and more popular as well. If you are in a location that has enough drivers to fit your needs then working with Uber to get a discount code for your guests is another option. This is sometimes a much more cost efficient way of travel for your guests.
P.S. Bonus points for brides who pick up the tab for the wedding party’s transportation. These girls and guys have already paid for their formal wear and no doubt hosted numerous wedding-related festivities. The least you can do is show your appreciation with a free ride to the main event!
